Pressing On Toward the Goal

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:13-14

Background

The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians while imprisoned, yet his words radiate joy and purpose. In these verses, Paul uses the imagery of a runner in a race to describe his relentless pursuit of knowing Christ and fulfilling God’s purpose for his life. Paul acknowledges that he hasn’t arrived at perfection, but he remains focused on the eternal prize—the heavenly calling of being with Christ and reflecting His glory.

Devotional

Life can feel like a race, filled with hurdles, detours, and moments of exhaustion. Paul’s words in Philippians remind us of the importance of focus and perseverance. He doesn’t dwell on past failures or victories; instead, he chooses to strain forward, keeping his eyes fixed on the ultimate goal—eternal life with Christ and the fulfillment of God’s plan.

Forgetting what lies behind doesn’t mean erasing memories but refusing to let the past control or define us. Whether it’s guilt from mistakes or pride from achievements, clinging to the past can hinder our progress. Paul encourages us to release what is behind and press forward with a singular focus on Christ.

Pressing on requires effort, discipline, and reliance on God’s strength. The prize Paul refers to is not a fleeting earthly reward but the eternal joy of being fully united with Christ and fulfilling His purpose.

What are the distractions or burdens that keep you from running your race well? Lay them down at the feet of Jesus and fix your eyes on the prize. Keep moving forward, even when the race feels difficult, knowing that God is with you and His reward is worth every step.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for calling me to run this race of faith. Help me to let go of the past and keep my focus on You. Strengthen me when the race feels hard, and remind me of the eternal prize You have promised. I trust You to guide my steps and give me the perseverance to press on toward the goal. Thank You for Your grace that sustains me. In Your holy name, Amen.

Application:

  • Let Go of the Past: Identify areas of your past—mistakes, regrets, or even past victories—that may be holding you back. Surrender them to God.
  • Focus on Your Goal: Set your eyes on Jesus and the purpose He has for your life. Let Him be your motivation and your strength.
  • Keep Moving Forward: Even when the journey is hard, choose to press on. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.

Reflection
  • What past events or experiences are you holding onto that might be hindering your progress?
  • How can you refocus your energy and attention on pressing forward in your walk with Christ?
  • Consider the “prize” that Paul speaks of. How does keeping an eternal perspective influence your daily choices and challenges?

Takeaway Thought:
You can’t move forward while looking back. Keep your eyes on Jesus, press on in faith, and trust God to lead you toward His perfect purpose.
