Courage and Strength in the Lord

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

Background

The book of Joshua begins at a pivotal moment in Israel’s history. Moses, the great leader who guided the Israelites out of Egypt, has died, and God appoints Joshua as his successor. Joshua faces the daunting task of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land—a land filled with fortified cities, strong armies, and uncertainty. In this transition, God speaks directly to Joshua, offering both encouragement and a command. Joshua 1:9 serves as a cornerstone of this divine encouragement, reminding him that courage is rooted in God’s presence and promises.

Devotional

Life often places us in situations where fear and discouragement seem inevitable. Joshua likely felt the weight of responsibility, wondering if he could fill Moses’ shoes or lead the people to victory. God’s command to Joshua wasn’t merely to encourage him to “try harder.” Instead, it was a reminder that courage comes from reliance on God, not self-confidence.

God’s presence is the game-changer. Joshua could be strong and courageous because the same God who parted the Red Sea and provided manna in the wilderness promised to go with him. This is true for us today. Whether we face uncertain futures, challenges in relationships, or spiritual battles, we can rest in the assurance of God’s constant companionship.

God doesn’t expect us to be fearless on our own; He empowers us to face fear with the strength that comes from His presence.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promise to be with us wherever we go. Help us to be strong and courageous in the face of challenges, knowing that You are always by our side. Give us the strength to trust in Your presence and to follow Your guidance. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
