“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Psalm 56:3

Background:
Psalm 56 was written by David during a time of great distress when he was captured by the Philistines in Gath (1 Samuel 21). Surrounded by enemies and fearing for his life, David turned to God for refuge. This psalm reflects his honest emotions—fear, vulnerability, and faith—and serves as a testament to the power of trusting God even in the darkest moments.
Devotional:
Fear is a natural part of life, but how we respond to it defines our faith. In Psalm 56:3, David doesn’t deny his fear; instead, he chooses to trust God in the midst of it. This verse is a simple yet profound reminder that faith isn’t the absence of fear—it’s the decision to place our trust in God despite it.
Trusting God doesn’t mean we’ll always understand what’s happening or that our problems will instantly disappear. It means we acknowledge that God is bigger than our fears and that He is in control. When fear grips your heart, take a moment to redirect your thoughts to the One who holds your life in His hands.
God’s promises are true: He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6), and His love casts out fear (1 John 4:18). Like David, you can face life’s uncertainties with courage, knowing that God is your refuge and strength.
Reflection:
- What fears are you currently facing, and how can you entrust them to God?
- How has God proven Himself faithful in past situations where you felt afraid?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my refuge in times of fear. When I feel afraid, help me to place my trust in You and to remember Your faithfulness. Strengthen my faith so that I can face life’s challenges with courage and confidence in Your unfailing love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application:
- When fear arises, take a moment to pray and recite Psalm 56:3 to yourself.
- Reflect on a time when God brought you through a fearful situation, and thank Him for His faithfulness.
- Share this verse with someone else who might be struggling with fear, encouraging them to trust in God.
Takeaway:
Fear may come, but it doesn’t have to control you. Trust in God, who is greater than your fears, and find peace in His presence.
When fear arises, how can you remind yourself to turn to God and trust in His protection and guidance?
