Scripture:
“Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” — Luke 15:10
Background
In Luke 15, Jesus shares three parables about the joy of recovering what was lost—the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son. The first two parables, in verses 1-10, highlight God’s relentless love and pursuit of sinners. At the time, religious leaders criticized Jesus for welcoming tax collectors and sinners. In response, Jesus told these stories to reveal God’s heart: He actively seeks the lost and rejoices when they are found.
Devotional
We all know the feeling of losing something valuable—a cherished possession, a meaningful memory, or even a sense of purpose. But have we considered how God feels about those who are spiritually lost?
Jesus paints a powerful picture in Luke 15:1-10. A shepherd leaves ninety-nine sheep to find the one that has wandered away. A woman turns her house upside down to recover a single lost coin. In both cases, their response upon finding what was lost is great joy. Jesus uses these examples to show that God’s heart is always pursuing those far from Him.
If you’ve ever felt distant from God, know this: He is searching for you, longing for you to return. And when even one person repents and turns to Him, all of heaven rejoices! God’s love is relentless—He never gives up on us. No matter how lost you feel, you are never beyond His reach.
Reflection
- When have you felt lost or distant from God? How did you experience His pursuit?
- How can you reflect God’s heart by seeking those who are spiritually lost?
- What does this passage teach you about the value God places on each individual?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for never giving up on me. Your love is relentless, always pursuing me even when I wander. Help me to trust in Your grace and to rejoice in the salvation of others. Give me a heart that reflects Your love, seeking the lost and sharing Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application
Take time today to pray for someone in your life who is spiritually lost. Ask God to give you opportunities to reflect His love and invite them into a deeper relationship with Him.
Takeaway
God’s love is relentless—He pursues the lost with joy and calls us to do the same.
