Scripture:
Luke 15:11-32 (ESV)
“And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.”
Background:
The Parable of the Prodigal Son is one of Jesus’ most well-known teachings. It tells the story of a younger son who demands his inheritance, squanders it in reckless living, and finds himself destitute. In desperation, he returns home, expecting rejection but instead finds his father waiting with open arms. The older son, however, struggles with resentment over his father’s forgiveness. This parable beautifully illustrates God’s grace, the joy of repentance, and the challenge of extending the same grace to others.
Devotional:
Have you ever felt unworthy of love or forgiveness? The prodigal son certainly did. After wasting everything, he hit rock bottom and decided to return home—not to be restored as a son, but to plead for a servant’s position. However, before he even reached the house, his father ran to embrace him. This moment reflects God’s heart for us—He is always ready to receive us, no matter how far we’ve strayed.
On the other hand, the older son represents a different struggle. He never left home, but his heart was distant from his father’s love. He resented the grace shown to his younger brother, revealing how easy it is to fall into self-righteousness and bitterness.
God’s love is extravagant and unconditional. He welcomes every repentant heart, rejoicing over our return rather than condemning our past. No matter where we are in our journey—whether we relate to the prodigal son or the older brother—God invites us to experience His grace fully.
Reflection:
- Have you ever felt like the prodigal son, ashamed of your mistakes? How does this parable encourage you?
- Do you struggle with resentment, like the older son, when others receive grace?
- How can you extend God’s love and forgiveness to someone in your life today?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love and grace. No matter how far I wander, You are always ready to welcome me back. Help me to rest in Your love and extend that same grace to others. Remove any self-righteousness or resentment from my heart so that I can rejoice in Your mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Application:
If you feel distant from God, take time today to pray and seek His presence. If you struggle with resentment or self-righteousness, ask God to soften your heart and help you extend grace to others.
Takeaway:
God’s love knows no limits. Whether we have wandered far or stayed near, He welcomes us with open arms, celebrating our return with joy.
