Walking Humbly with God

Scripture:
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Micah 6:8 (ESV)

Background:

The prophet Micah spoke to the people of Israel during a time of great moral and spiritual decline. They had become focused on religious rituals and sacrifices while neglecting the core of God’s desires—justice, mercy, and humility. Micah 6:6-8 is a response to the people’s questions about what they should offer to please God. The answer is clear: God is not interested in outward religious acts alone but in transformed hearts that reflect His love and righteousness.

Devotional:

What does God truly desire from us? Sometimes, we complicate our faith, thinking we need to do more, give more, or be more in order to please Him. Yet, Micah 6:8 simplifies it beautifully—God calls us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him.

  • To act justly means living with integrity, treating others with fairness, and standing up for what is right. Justice is not merely about legal matters but about living in a way that reflects God’s righteousness.
  • To love mercy is to extend grace and compassion, forgiving as we have been forgiven. It means seeking to love others, even when they don’t deserve it, just as God has loved us.
  • To walk humbly with God is to live in daily dependence on Him, recognizing that our wisdom and strength come from Him alone. Humility keeps our hearts soft, our motives pure, and our faith grounded.

Rather than religious duty, God desires a heart that reflects His own—one filled with justice, mercy, and humility. Today, consider how you can live out these principles in your daily life.

Reflection:

  1. In what areas of your life do you struggle with acting justly?
  2. How can you show mercy to someone who may not deserve it?
  3. What does walking humbly with God look like in your daily routine?
  4. Are there ways in which you have focused more on religious actions rather than heart transformation?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me what is truly good. Help me to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You each day. Teach me to reflect Your character in the way I treat others and to seek Your will above my own. Transform my heart so that my life is a testimony of Your grace and righteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Application:

  • Look for an opportunity to stand up for justice, whether it’s advocating for someone in need or making a fair decision in your own life.
  • Show mercy today by offering forgiveness or kindness to someone who may not expect it.
  • Spend time in prayer and reflection, asking God to guide your steps in humility and reliance on Him.

Takeaway:

God does not require extravagant sacrifices—He desires a heart that reflects His justice, mercy, and humility. Let’s commit to living a faith that is not just spoken but demonstrated in the way we love and serve others.
