Scripture:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
John 13:21 (ESV)
Background:
As Jesus gathered with His disciples to share the Passover meal—the Last Supper—He revealed that one of them would betray Him. This deeply personal moment highlights not only the pain of betrayal but also Jesus’ sovereign knowledge and unwavering commitment to the path of the cross. Even in the face of darkness, Jesus moved forward with grace and purpose, fulfilling the Father’s will.
Devotional:
There’s a haunting weight in the silence of betrayal. Judas, one of the twelve, walked closely with Jesus, heard His teachings, witnessed His miracles—and still, he chose to walk away. Jesus, knowing full well what Judas would do, still washed his feet, shared a meal, and extended love to him.
This moment reminds us that Christ understands the sting of betrayal. He knows what it feels like to be abandoned, misunderstood, and rejected by those closest to Him. And yet, He did not recoil. He embraced the pain because He knew it was part of God’s greater redemption story.
As we journey toward Easter, this passage challenges us to trust God even when things don’t make sense—when people hurt us, when darkness creeps in, when the path ahead is painful. Jesus did not avoid suffering; He entered into it with purpose and love.
Reflection:
- Have you ever felt betrayed or let down by someone close to you? How did you respond?
- How does Jesus’ response to Judas challenge the way we treat those who hurt us?
- What would it look like to trust God more deeply in the midst of painful circumstances?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, You knew the pain of betrayal, yet You responded with love and grace. Help me to trust You when life hurts, and to extend grace even when it’s difficult. Teach me to walk in obedience, knowing that Your plans are good—even when I can’t see the full picture. Strengthen my heart to remain faithful to You. Amen.
Application:
This week, consider someone who has hurt or disappointed you. Take time to pray for them. Ask God to heal your heart and help you respond with grace. Look for ways to show love, even when it costs you something.
Takeaway:
Jesus trusted the Father’s plan even in the face of betrayal. As we walk toward the cross, may we follow His example—trusting God’s heart when the path is hard, and choosing love over resentment.
