📖 Scripture:
Matthew 27:27–44 (ESV)
“And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’”
(Matthew 27:28–29)
📚 Background:
Maundy Thursday traditionally commemorates the Last Supper, but it also marks the beginning of Christ’s Passion—His deep descent into suffering for our sake. Following His betrayal and unjust trial, Jesus is delivered into the hands of Roman soldiers. Here, in this section of Matthew 27, we witness the cruelty, humiliation, and mockery that Jesus endured before and during the crucifixion.
💭 Devotional:
As Jesus is mocked, beaten, and nailed to the cross, we witness not only physical suffering but emotional and spiritual agony. The crown of thorns, meant to ridicule His kingship, ironically revealed the depth of His glory. The very crowd that once shouted “Hosanna” now cries out in derision. Yet through every blow, every insult, Jesus remains silent, bearing the weight of humanity’s sin.
This passage reminds us that Jesus was not just crucified—He was mocked in our place. He bore not only our punishment but our shame. On Maundy Thursday, we remember that Jesus gave Himself fully, not only in service at the Last Supper but also in sacrificial love on the cross. His kingship was not marked by power and pride, but by humility and pain. He chose the crown of thorns so we might one day wear a crown of life.
❓Reflection:
- What stands out to you most about how Jesus was treated before the crucifixion?
- How does knowing Christ endured mocking and shame for you change how you approach Him?
- In what areas of your life do you need to surrender to the humility of Christ?
🙏 Prayer:
Lord Jesus, on this Maundy Thursday, I pause in awe of Your incredible love. You were mocked, beaten, and crucified in my place. Thank You for enduring such suffering so I might be free. Help me never to take lightly the cost of the cross. Teach me to walk in humility, to love sacrificially, and to honor You as my risen King. Amen.
🪞 Application:
As you reflect on Christ’s suffering, take time today to read through the Passion story slowly. Consider participating in a Maundy Thursday service or creating your own time of reflection, perhaps with communion at home. Let the weight of His love stir your heart to gratitude and renewed devotion.
📌 Takeaway:
Jesus wore a crown of thorns so we could be crowned with life. His silence before mockers was love speaking louder than words.
