Finished in Darkness: The Power of the Cross

📖 Scripture:

Matthew 27:45–56 (ESV)

“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom…”
(vv. 50–51a)

🕰 Background:

Good Friday marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the darkest day in history that ultimately became the foundation of hope. In Matthew 27:45–56, we witness Jesus’ final moments: the earth shakes, darkness covers the land, and the temple veil tears—profound signs that redemption is unfolding. God’s judgment meets His mercy at the cross.

💡 Devotional:

At noon, the sky turned dark. Creation mourned as the Creator bore the full weight of humanity’s sin. Jesus’ cry—“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”—was not a cry of defeat, but one of deep suffering and fulfillment of prophecy (Psalm 22). When He breathed His last, He tore the barrier between God and man.

The veil in the temple represented separation from God’s presence. Its tearing symbolizes that, through Christ’s death, we are now invited into intimate relationship with the Father. This moment is the turning point of history—sin atoned for, death defeated, access granted.

Good Friday reminds us that God’s greatest work was done in complete surrender. Christ chose the cross so we could choose eternal life. In the agony of Calvary, we find the assurance of God’s love and the depth of His grace.

Reflection:

  1. What does the tearing of the temple veil mean to you personally?
  2. How can you live in the freedom Christ purchased for you on the cross?
  3. Are there places in your life where you’re holding back from God’s presence?

🙏 Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for the cross. Thank You for enduring the darkness so I could walk in the light of grace. Help me never to take Your sacrifice for granted. Soften my heart to the power of Your love and the victory of Your surrender. Today, I remember Your suffering with awe and gratitude. Amen.

🏃‍♂️ Application:

Set aside time today for quiet reflection. Read the full passage aloud, sit in the weight of what Jesus endured, and journal your response. If possible, attend a Good Friday service or participate in communion with reverence.

📌 Takeaway:

The cross is not the end of the story—it is the climax of love. In the darkest moment, Jesus secured our greatest hope.
