Day 4 Study on Ruth
📖 Ruth 1:19–22 (NIV)
“So the two women went on until they came to Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole town was stirred because of them, and the women exclaimed, ‘Can this be Naomi?’ ‘Don’t call me Naomi,’ she told them. ‘Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.’ So Naomi returned from Moab accompanied by Ruth the Moabite, her daughter-in-law, arriving in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning.”
Background
Naomi returns to Bethlehem after a devastating season in Moab. Once full of promise, she is now marked by loss—her husband and sons gone, her heart heavy. The town barely recognizes her. In sorrow, she renames herself Mara, meaning “bitter,” reflecting the pain she believes has come from God. Yet, even in this dark chapter, a flicker of hope emerges—the harvest is beginning, and Ruth remains faithfully by her side.
Devotional
Life can feel like Naomi’s journey—moving from fullness to emptiness, leaving us wondering if we’ll ever see restoration. Naomi believed God had afflicted her, but what she couldn’t see was that her return marked the start of redemption.
Her bitterness was real, her grief deep, yet even in her sorrow, God was working. The barley harvest—a symbol of provision—begins just as Naomi arrives. Though she couldn’t recognize hope, it was growing all around her.
How often do we judge God’s work by our present suffering, assuming He has abandoned us? Naomi’s story reminds us that even when we feel empty, God is planting seeds of restoration. We may not see the harvest yet, but He is faithful to bring it in His time.
Reflection
🔸 Have you ever experienced a season where you felt like Naomi—returning empty and uncertain?
🔸 How do you respond when life feels bitter? Do you struggle to see God’s provision in hardship?
🔸 What are some ways God may already be preparing a “harvest” in your life, even if you can’t see it yet?
Prayer
Lord, in seasons of sorrow, remind me that You are working even when I cannot see it. When bitterness clouds my heart, help me trust Your faithfulness. Turn my emptiness into a testimony of Your redemption. Let me hold fast to Your promises and wait with hope for the harvest You are preparing. Amen.
Application
🌾 Hold onto hope—God’s provision is often already growing around us. Look for signs of His faithfulness even in difficult seasons.
🌾 Name your sorrow, but don’t stay there—Naomi renamed herself Mara, but God had a greater story to tell through her. Trust that He is still writing yours.
🌾 Lean on faithful community—Ruth refused to let Naomi walk alone. Surround yourself with those who encourage you when faith feels fragile.
Takeaway
Bitterness is not the end of the story. Naomi returned empty, but she did not return alone. And in Bethlehem, hope was waiting—both in the fields and in the faithfulness of God.
