Scripture:
Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more⌠âDo you intend to reign over us?â they asked. And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.
â Genesis 37:5â11 (selected, NIV)
đ Background:
Joseph, favored by his father and clothed with a symbol of distinction, now shares dreams that hint at a divine destiny. In both dreamsâsheaves bowing and stars kneelingâJoseph is exalted. To his brothers, these dreams arenât visions; theyâre threats. To Joseph, they may have been mysteries wrapped in awe. But to God, they were seeds of providence, planted long before Joseph would understand them.
đž Devotional:
How often do we bury our calling because it makes others uncomfortable?
Josephâs dreams werenât prideful proclamationsâthey were glimpses of purpose, entrusted to him before refinement. His brothers couldnât see the blessing behind the boldness; all they saw was the threat to their place, their worth, their role in the family. Jealousy turns promises into poison when hearts are unhealed.
But God allows even misinterpretation to become part of the plan.
Josephâs dreams would one day be fulfilledânot through triumph but through testing. He would face betrayal, slavery, imprisonment… but each valley carved space for the dream to come alive in a purer, humbler form. Sometimes, the dream isn’t the problemâthe preparation is.
If you’ve ever felt silenced for daring to hope big or follow God’s vision, take heart: what others resist may be what God redeems.
đŞ Reflection:
- Has God placed something in your heart that others have misunderstood or dismissed?
- How do you respond to resistanceâwithdraw, defend, or lean deeper into Godâs calling?
- What role might jealousy (yours or othersâ) play in your story right now?
đ Prayer:
Lord, help me steward the dreams Youâve placed in me with humility and faith. When others do not understand, give me grace to trust You more than I need their approval. Teach me to walk in obedience, even when itâs lonely, and refine my heart in the waiting. Amen.
đ ď¸ Application:
Write down a dream or calling youâve kept silent out of fear. Pray over it, then share it with someone who will speak truth and encouragement into your life.
đ Takeaway:
God doesnât just give dreamsâHe develops them. Rejection doesnât cancel your calling; it prepares your heart to carry it well.
