Sold into Slavery, Yet God’s Plan Unfolds

📖 Scripture: Genesis 37:25–36 (NIV)
“So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver…”

🕰️ Background:
The pit wasn’t the end. As Joseph sat in isolation, his brothers devised a permanent solution: sell him. For twenty shekels—the price of a slave—they exchanged their brother for profit and concocted a lie drenched in goat’s blood and guilt. Jacob mourned a death that hadn’t happened. And Joseph? He was on his way to Egypt… and to destiny.

💬 Devotional:
Sometimes the unraveling feels like abandonment. Joseph’s chains weren’t just iron—they were forged in betrayal, fear, and silence. He was far from home, misunderstood, utterly alone.

But behind every link of that chain, God was threading divine intention. The cruelty of man would not cancel the providence of God. Joseph’s journey into slavery was God’s undercover mission into the heart of Egypt—a place where salvation for many would one day begin.

What others meant to bury him, God would use to elevate him.

You may not see purpose in what feels like a detour. But divine orchestration often begins in unwanted places. In the foreign, God prepares us for the future.

🧠 Reflection:

  1. When have you felt as though you were “sold out” or forgotten?
  2. What does this passage reveal about God’s ability to work through even the worst human intentions?
  3. Are there any “foreign places” in your life right now where God might be planting the seeds of greater purpose?

🙏 Prayer:
God of mercy, when I feel discarded or misunderstood, remind me that Your plan is not undone. Let betrayal become the beginning of new trust. Use what was meant to harm me to prepare me for something sacred. I trust You with the hidden pieces of my story. Amen.

🛠️ Application:
Take time today to journal one life event that felt like a detour—but now reveals God’s providence. If you’re in the middle of one now, write a declaration of faith that says: “Even here, I believe You are at work.”

📌 Takeaway:
The pit didn’t stop God’s plan—neither did the price. What breaks us can become what builds His purpose in us.
