Anna’s Proclamation

🎄 December Theme: The Journey to the Manger

📖 Scripture

Luke 2:36–38 (NIV)
“There was also a prophet, Anna… She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.”

📚 Background

Anna was a prophetess from the tribe of Asher, elderly and widowed for many decades. She spent her life in the temple, worshiping, fasting, and praying continually. When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple, Anna immediately recognized Him as the One who would bring redemption to God’s people.

Her response was twofold: she gave thanks to God, and she proclaimed the good news to all who were waiting for the Messiah. Anna becomes one of the first evangelists of the New Testament—announcing that the Savior had come.

💬 Devotional

Anna’s life is a beautiful picture of devotion, perseverance, and spiritual sensitivity. She had spent years in worship, prayer, and expectation. When Jesus arrived, she didn’t miss Him.

Her proclamation reminds us that the birth of Jesus is not just a sweet moment—it is the arrival of redemption, the fulfillment of God’s promise to rescue humankind. Anna saw in the infant Jesus what the world had been longing for: hope, restoration, and salvation.

On our Journey to the Manger, Anna invites us to slow down, to watch for God, and to recognize the Savior who has come near. Her life teaches us that those who seek God faithfully are ready to recognize His work when it appears.

And like Anna, once we encounter Jesus, we cannot keep the news to ourselves. The birth of Christ is too glorious, too life‑changing, too hope‑filled to remain silent.

🪞 Reflection Questions

  1. What does Anna’s devotion teach you about waiting on God with expectation?
