📿 Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross
🕊️ Welcome Moment
Testing seasons rarely feel purposeful. They feel like stretching, slowing, stripping, and sometimes silence. Yet Scripture reveals that God uses testing not to weaken us, but to strengthen us—to shape our hearts, deepen our dependence, and prepare us for what lies ahead.
As you take these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to see the wilderness not as abandonment, but as formation. God is present even in the places that feel barren.
📖 Scripture Immersion
Deuteronomy 8:1–5 (NIV)
“…the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you… to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord… Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.”
Read slowly. Notice the verbs: led, humbled, tested, taught, provided, fathered.
🌄 Snapshot
Imagine a parent teaching a child to walk. The parent steps back—not to abandon, but to strengthen. The child wobbles, reaches, tries again. The parent watches closely, ready to steady and guide.
To the child, the distance feels like testing.
To the parent, it is love.
Love that strengthens.
Love that prepares.
Love that stays near even when it feels far.
This is the heart of Deuteronomy 8.
The wilderness was not punishment—it was preparation.
🔍 Deep Dive
“The Lord your God led you…”
Even in the wilderness, God is leading.
Your testing is not directionless—His hand is steady.
“…to humble and test you…”
Testing reveals what we trust.
Humility makes room for God’s strength.
“…to teach you…”
The wilderness is a classroom.
God teaches dependence, obedience, and resilience.
“…man does not live on bread alone…”
Testing exposes our true source.
Bread sustains the body; God sustains the soul.
“…your clothes did not wear out…”
Even when Israel didn’t notice, God was providing.
In your testing, He is sustaining you in ways you may not yet see.
“…as a man disciplines his son…”
Discipline here means training, shaping, forming.
This is the love of a Father preparing His children for promise.
