Releasing the Old

Sunday Theme 2026: Surrender

Opening Thoughts

Some things cling to us long after their season has passed—old fears, old disappointments, old identities, old ways of coping. They settle into the corners of our hearts until we begin to believe they belong there. But God, in His mercy, invites us into a different posture: not grasping, but releasing. Not rehearsing what was, but opening ourselves to what He is doing now. Surrender is not forgetting; it is trusting that God is leading us forward with purpose, even when the path is unfamiliar.

Scripture for Meditation

Isaiah 43:18–19 (NIV)
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Reflection Journey

Isaiah speaks to a people who knew loss, exile, and disappointment. God does not dismiss their pain, but He does redirect their gaze. Do not dwell on the past. Not because the past is insignificant, but because God is not finished. He is always moving toward redemption, always creating pathways where none existed, always bringing life to barren places.

Surrender, then, becomes an act of holy perception—choosing to see God’s new work rather than clinging to what once was. It is the courage to loosen our grip on familiar patterns, to release the narratives we’ve rehearsed, and to trust that God’s “new thing” is not only possible but already unfolding.

Where might God be inviting you to stop dwelling and start perceiving? What wilderness in your life might He be transforming into a place of unexpected provision?

Practices for the Week

  • Name What You’re Releasing — Write down one thing from the past that God is inviting you to surrender. Pray over it daily.
  • Practice Holy Noticing — Each day, identify one “new thing” God is doing—however small.
  • Create Space for Renewal — Set aside 10 minutes of silence each morning to simply sit with God, letting Him reshape your expectations.
  • Walk a New Path — Do something this week that symbolizes stepping forward: a new route on your walk, a new prayer practice, a new act of kindness.

Reflection Questions

  • What past experience or mindset has been holding you in place?
  • How might releasing it open you to God’s new work?
  • Where do you sense God making “a way in the wilderness” in your life right now?
  • What does surrender look like for you in this season?

Closing Benediction

May the God who makes streams flow in wastelands guide your steps this week.
May He loosen the grip of what no longer serves you and open your eyes to the new thing He is already bringing to life.
Walk forward in trust, in courage, and in surrender—held by the One who makes all things new.
