The Compassion of Christ

📿 Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross

🕊️ Welcome Moment

Jesus never rushed past people. He saw them—really saw them. Not as crowds, interruptions, or problems, but as beloved souls in need of a Shepherd. His compassion was not a feeling alone; it moved Him to teach, heal, touch, restore, and call His followers into the same mission.

As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to see the world through His eyes—eyes filled with mercy, tenderness, and urgency.

📖 Scripture Immersion

Matthew 9:35–38 (NIV)
“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd… ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.’”

Read slowly. Let Jesus’ compassion shape your own.

🌄 Snapshot

Imagine Jesus walking through villages—dust on His feet, crowds pressing in, needs everywhere. People come with sickness, fear, confusion, spiritual hunger. No one is turned away. No story is too messy. No burden too heavy.

Then Jesus pauses.
He looks at the crowds.
And His heart breaks.

He sees their exhaustion.
He sees their wandering.
He sees their longing for hope.

And from that deep well of compassion, He turns to His disciples and says:
“Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers.”

This is not just a call for then—it is a call for now.

🔍 Deep Dive

“Jesus went through all the towns and villages…”
His ministry was not selective.
He moved toward people others avoided.

“…teaching… proclaiming… healing…”
Jesus meets needs of the mind, heart, and body.
His compassion is holistic.

“He saw the crowds…”
Seeing is the beginning of compassion.
Jesus notices what others overlook.

“…harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
He sees their vulnerability, confusion, and spiritual hunger.
He sees the weight they carry.

“He had compassion on them.”
This word means “to be moved from the depths.”
Jesus’ compassion is not distant—it is deeply felt and deeply active.

“The harvest is plentiful…”
There is no shortage of people longing for hope.
The world is ripe for grace.

“…but the workers are few.”
Jesus invites His followers into His mission.
Compassion becomes a calling.

“Ask the Lord of the harvest…”
Prayer is the starting point of mission.
We pray not for tasks, but for hearts willing to go.

As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
His compassion is both your comfort and your calling.
