Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross
đď¸ Welcome Moment
There are moments in our walk with Jesus when He pulls back the veilâmoments when His glory breaks through our ordinary days and reminds us who He truly is. The Transfiguration is one of those moments. It is a mountaintop revelation given just before the valley of suffering, a glimpse of divine majesty before the shadow of the cross.
As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, todayâs passage invites you to behold His glory so you can trust Him more deeply in the places where the path becomes steep.
đ Scripture Immersion
Matthew 17:1â8 (NIV)
âThis is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!â
Read slowly. Imagine the mountain, the light, the voice, the aweâand the gentle touch of Jesus saying, âDo not be afraid.â
đSnapshot
Jesus leads Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. They expect prayer. They receive revelation.
Suddenly Jesusâ face shines like the sun. His clothes blaze with light. Moses and Elijah appear, representing the Law and the Prophets, all pointing to Him. The disciples fall to the ground, overwhelmed by glory.
Then a voice from the cloud speaks:
âThis is my Son⌠Listen to Him.â
And when they look up, the vision is goneâ
âThey saw no one except Jesus.â
The glory fades, but the truth remains:
Jesus is the beloved Son, the fulfillment of Godâs story, the One worthy of trust as He walks toward the cross.
đ Deep Dive
âAfter six daysâŚâ
This moment follows Jesusâ teaching about His suffering. Revelation often comes after hard truth.
âHe led them up a high mountainâŚâ
Jesus invites His closest followers into deeper revelation. Some lessons require elevationâstepping away from the noise.
âHe was transfigured before themâŚâ
This is not borrowed glory. It is His true identity shining through.
The cross will reveal His love; the mountain reveals His majesty.
âMoses and Elijah appearedâŚâ
The entire story of Scripture converges on Jesus.
He is the fulfillment of every promise.
âPeter said⌠âLet me build sheltersâŚââ
We often want to stay in the moments of glory, but Jesus leads us back down the mountain to walk out our calling.
âThey fell facedown, terrifiedâŚâ
Godâs glory humbles us, but it also prepares us.
âJesus came and touched themâŚâ
Majesty meets tenderness.
Glory meets compassion.
The One who shines like the sun also reaches with gentle hands.
âThey saw no one except Jesus.â
This is the heart of discipleshipâ
not visions, not experiences, not spiritual highsâ
but Jesus alone.
As you walk toward the cross with Him, remember:
The One who suffers is also the One who shines.
