Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross
Welcome Moment
There are moments in the journey of faith when Jesus reveals Himself in ways that demand a response. The Triumphal Entry is one of those moments—Jesus riding into Jerusalem not as a warrior king but as a humble Savior, fulfilling prophecy and inviting the world to see Him clearly.
As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to consider how you welcome Jesus—not just with words of praise, but with a surrendered heart ready to follow Him wherever He leads.
Scripture Immersion
Matthew 21:1–11 (NIV)
“See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey.”
Read slowly. Let the gentleness of Jesus shape your understanding of His kingship.
Snapshot
The road into Jerusalem is crowded. Cloaks are thrown on the ground. Branches wave in the air. Voices rise in hope and expectation: “Hosanna to the Son of David!”
Jesus enters not on a stallion but on a donkey—fulfilling Zechariah’s prophecy and revealing the nature of His kingdom. He comes not to conquer Rome but to conquer sin. Not to overthrow governments but to overthrow death. Not to claim a throne of gold but a cross of wood.
The crowd celebrates, but many misunderstand. They want a king who fits their expectations. Jesus comes as the King they truly need.
Deep Dive
“Go to the village ahead of you…”
Jesus enters Jerusalem with intentionality. Every detail is purposeful, fulfilling Scripture and revealing His identity.
“The Lord needs them…”
Even the donkey becomes part of God’s redemptive plan. Nothing is too small to be used by Him.
“A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road…”
Laying down cloaks was an act of honor—symbolizing surrender and recognition of royalty.
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
Hosanna means “save us now.” The crowd cries for rescue, not realizing salvation will come through the cross.
“Who is this?”
The whole city is stirred. Jesus’ arrival demands an answer. It still does.
As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
He is the humble King who comes to save—not by force, but by sacrificial love.

Jesus, You are the humble King who comes in gentleness and truth. Teach me to welcome You with a surrendered heart, laying down anything that keeps me from following You fully.
