The Withered Fig Tree

Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross

Welcome Moment

Some lessons Jesus teaches with words. Others He teaches with moments—living parables that reveal the condition of our hearts. The withered fig tree is one of those moments. What looks like judgment is actually an invitation: to examine the fruit of our lives, to trust God boldly, and to forgive freely.

As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to let Jesus search your heart, strengthen your faith, and soften your spirit.

Scripture Immersion

Mark 11:20–25 (NIV)
“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.
“…whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Read slowly. Let Jesus’ call to faith settle deeply within you.

Snapshot

Morning light breaks as Jesus and His disciples walk the familiar road. They pass the fig tree He spoke to the day before—now withered from the roots. The disciples are stunned. Jesus uses the moment not to highlight judgment but to reveal the power of faith.

He speaks of mountains moving, prayers answered, and hearts freed through forgiveness. The withered tree becomes a living reminder: faith is not a concept but a posture—rooted, trusting, surrendered.

Deep Dive

“The fig tree withered from the roots.”
The issue wasn’t surface-level. The roots were the problem. Jesus invites us to examine the hidden places of our hearts.

“Have faith in God.”
Not faith in outcomes, timing, or our own strength—faith in God Himself.

“If anyone says to this mountain…”
Jesus uses imagery to show that nothing is beyond God’s power. Mountains represent obstacles, impossibilities, and fears.

“…believe that you have received it.”
This is not wishful thinking. It is trust rooted in God’s character and aligned with His will.

“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them…”
Faith and forgiveness are intertwined. A heart that trusts God is a heart that releases others.

As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
True faith bears fruit—trust, prayer, forgiveness, and a heart aligned with God.
