The Greatest Commandment

Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross

Welcome Moment

As Jesus walks steadily toward the cross, the questions surrounding Him grow sharper. Religious leaders attempt to trap Him, test Him, and expose Him. Yet in the midst of their schemes, Jesus offers clarity so profound that it becomes the foundation of all Christian living.

In a world full of competing priorities, Jesus brings everything back to one center: love—love for God and love for people. As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to return to the heart of discipleship.

Scripture Immersion

Matthew 22:34–40 (NIV)
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’”
“‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Read slowly. Let these words sift your motives and reorder your affections.

Story or Snapshot

A Pharisee steps forward with a question meant to test Jesus:
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus doesn’t hesitate. He doesn’t debate. He doesn’t list rules or rituals. Instead, He reveals the heartbeat of God’s kingdom.

Love God with everything.
Love people generously.
Everything else hangs on these two commands.

In a moment of tension, Jesus offers a vision of life that is simple, beautiful, and deeply challenging.

Deep Dive

“Love the Lord your God…”
This is not partial affection. It is wholehearted devotion—heart, soul, mind aligned toward God.

“…with all your heart, soul, and mind.”
Love is not merely emotion. It is the orientation of your entire being.

“This is the first and greatest commandment.”
Jesus places love for God at the center of all obedience.

“And the second is like it…”
Love for people is inseparable from love for God. One flows from the other.

“All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Every command, every teaching, every act of righteousness is rooted in love.

As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
Love is not just the greatest command—it is the shape of the life Jesus calls you to live.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, You have shown me that love is the foundation of all true obedience. Teach me to love the Father with my whole heart, soul, and mind. Shape my life so that love for others flows naturally from my love for You. As I walk with You toward the cross, deepen my devotion and widen my compassion. Amen.
