The Anointing at Bethany

Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross

Welcome Moment

Some moments in Scripture feel like holy ground—quiet, intimate, overflowing with devotion. Six days before Passover, Jesus enters a home where love surrounds Him, gratitude fills the air, and one woman’s extravagant act becomes a fragrance that still lingers through history.

As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to consider what it means to offer Jesus your most costly, wholehearted worship.

Scripture Immersion

John 12:1–8 (NIV)
“Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped His feet with her hair.”

Read slowly. Imagine the fragrance filling the room.

Snapshot

The home in Bethany is warm with friendship. Lazarus reclines at the table—alive again. Martha serves with joy. And Mary enters the room carrying something precious: a jar of pure nard, worth a year’s wages.

Without hesitation, she breaks it open.
Without reserve, she pours it out.
Without shame, she wipes His feet with her hair.

The room is filled with fragrance.
The disciples are filled with questions.
Jesus is filled with honor.

Mary’s act is not waste—it is worship. She anoints Him for burial before anyone else understands what is coming.

Deep Dive

“Six days before the Passover…”
The cross is near. Every moment carries weight.

“Mary took… an expensive perfume.”
Her offering is costly, intentional, and deeply personal.

“She poured it on Jesus’ feet…”
A posture of humility. She gives Him her treasure and her honor.

“The house was filled with the fragrance…”
True worship always leaves a lingering aroma—impacting everyone present.

“Why wasn’t this perfume sold…?”
Judas sees waste. Jesus sees devotion. Worship is often misunderstood by those who value efficiency over intimacy.

“It was intended… to prepare for My burial.”
Mary’s act becomes prophetic. She honors Jesus in a way no one else does before His death.

As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
Extravagant love is never wasted when it is poured out on Him.

Companion Questions

  1. What “jar” in your life is Jesus inviting you to break open in worship?
  2. How does Mary’s devotion challenge your understanding of what true worship looks like?
  3. What costly offering—time, attention, obedience, surrender—might Jesus be inviting you to give?
  4. How can your life become a “fragrance” that honors Christ this week?

Pilgrimage Practice

  • Fragrance Whisper: Pray throughout the day, “Jesus, let my life be a fragrance of love to You.”
  • Costly Offering: Choose one meaningful act of devotion that requires sacrifice or intentionality.
  • Quiet Adoration: Spend a few minutes simply sitting with Jesus—no requests, just love.
  • Walking Meditation: As you walk, imagine carrying your own alabaster jar and offering it freely to Him.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, You are worthy of my deepest devotion and my most costly offering. Teach me to worship You with the same wholehearted love Mary showed. Break open anything in me that I hold too tightly, and fill my life with the fragrance of Your presence. As I walk with You toward the cross, shape my heart to honor You in every step. Amen.
