The Last Supper

Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross

Welcome Moment

The upper room is filled with a sacred stillness. Jesus gathers His disciples for a meal that is unlike any other — not symbolic, not metaphorical, but a true sharing of Himself. In this moment, He gives His body and His blood, inviting His followers into a communion that transcends time.

As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to come to the table where Christ truly gives Himself — where remembrance is not recalling a distant event, but entering into the mystery of His saving love made present.

Scripture Immersion

Luke 22:14–20 (NIV)
“This is my body given for you… This cup is the new covenant in my blood…”

Read slowly. Hear Jesus speaking these words personally, intentionally, literally.

Snapshot

The disciples recline around the table, unaware of the depth of what Jesus is giving them. He takes bread — ordinary, familiar — and declares it to be His body. He takes the cup — simple, shared — and declares it to be His blood.

He does not say, “This represents My body.”
He does not say, “This symbolizes My blood.”
He says, “This is…”

And when He commands, “Do this in remembrance of Me,” He is not asking them to merely recall a memory. He is inviting them — and all who follow Him — to participate in the very reality of His sacrifice, made present in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup.

This is communion with Christ Himself.
This is covenant.
This is love poured out.

Deep Dive

“When the hour came…”
This is the appointed moment — the fulfillment of God’s plan. Jesus is not reenacting something; He is initiating something eternal.

“He reclined at the table…”
He draws His disciples close. Communion is always personal.

“This is My body… This is My blood…”
Jesus speaks plainly. He gives what He says. His words accomplish what they declare.

“Given for you… poured out for you…”
This is sacrificial, self‑giving love — not symbolic, but real.

“Do this in remembrance of Me.”
The word “remembrance” (anamnesis) means more than memory. It means to make present, to participate in the saving act of Christ.
When we come to the table, we are not watching from a distance — we are drawn into the mystery of His once‑for‑all sacrifice.

As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
He gives Himself fully — body, blood, soul, and divinity — so you may share in His life.
