Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross
Welcome Moment
Some scenes in Scripture feel heavy with spiritual tension — moments where darkness presses close, yet the light of Christ refuses to be overcome. In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus steps forward to meet His betrayer, not as a victim, but as the willing Lamb of God.
As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to witness His courage, His authority, and His unwavering obedience in the face of betrayal.
Scripture Immersion
John 18:1–11 (NIV)
“Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’”
Read slowly. Notice that Jesus steps forward — not away.
Snapshot
The night is still. The garden is familiar. Jesus has prayed, surrendered, and strengthened His heart. Suddenly, the quiet is broken by the sound of footsteps — soldiers, lanterns, weapons, and Judas leading the way.
But Jesus does not hide.
He does not retreat.
He steps toward them.
“Who is it you want?”
“Jesus of Nazareth.”
“I am He.”
At His words, the armed crowd draws back and falls to the ground. Divine authority radiates even in the moment of His arrest.
Peter reacts with a sword. Jesus responds with surrender.
“Put your sword away. Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”
The betrayal is real.
The arrest is unjust.
But Jesus is in complete control.
Deep Dive
“Jesus… went out and asked them…”
He initiates the moment. The cross is not forced upon Him — He embraces it.
“I am He.”
These words echo the divine name. Even in arrest, His glory is unmistakable.
“They drew back and fell to the ground.”
Human power collapses before divine presence.
“If you are looking for Me, then let these men go.”
Even in betrayal, Jesus protects His own.
Peter’s sword… Jesus’ rebuke.
Peter fights the wrong battle with the wrong weapon. Jesus chooses the Father’s will over human impulse.
“Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”
This is surrender with purpose — the cup of suffering becomes the cup of salvation.
As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
He is not overtaken — He offers Himself.
