🎄 December Theme: The Journey to the Manger
📖 Scripture
Isaiah 11:1–5 (NIV)
“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.”
📚 Background
Isaiah 11 is a prophecy of hope given to Israel during a time of despair. The “stump of Jesse” represents the fallen royal line of David, which seemed cut off and lifeless. Yet God promised that from this stump, a new shoot would rise—the Messiah. This passage points directly to Jesus, born in Bethlehem, who embodies wisdom, justice, and righteousness. The manger is the beginning of this fulfillment: the Root of Jesse rising to bring life where there seemed only loss.
💬 Devotional
My grandmother once told me about a rose bush in her yard that looked completely dead after a harsh winter. She thought it was gone for good, but in spring, a single green shoot pushed through, eventually blooming more beautifully than before. She said, “It reminded me that God brings life out of what looks hopeless.”
Isaiah’s prophecy is just like that rose bush. Out of what seemed like a dead stump, God promised new life. Jesus is the Root of Jesse—the Branch who bears fruit, the One who brings righteousness and justice. The manger is proof that God’s promises are not defeated by despair.
On our journey to the manger, we are reminded that God specializes in bringing hope out of hopelessness. Where we see stumps, He sees roots ready to rise.
