Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross
Welcome Moment
There is a kind of silence that feels heavy — the silence after loss, after unanswered questions, after hope seems buried. Holy Saturday is that silence. Jesus’ body lies in the tomb. The disciples hide behind locked doors. The world holds its breath.
As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you into the quiet in‑between — the place where God seems still, yet His redemption is already unfolding beneath the surface.
Scripture Immersion
Matthew 27:57–66 (NIV)
“Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb…”
Read slowly. Feel the weight of the stillness.
Snapshot
Evening settles over Jerusalem. The crowds have dispersed. The cross stands empty. Joseph of Arimathea, a quiet disciple, steps forward with courage. He asks Pilate for Jesus’ body — a risky act of devotion.
He wraps Jesus carefully, tenderly, and lays Him in a new tomb cut from rock. A stone is rolled into place. The world grows silent.
Meanwhile, the chief priests and Pharisees remember Jesus’ words about rising again. They request a guard, a seal, a stone — as if human strength could contain divine power.
The tomb is sealed.
The guards stand watch.
The disciples grieve.
Heaven waits.
It is the day of silence — but not the day of defeat.
Deep Dive
“Joseph… had himself become a disciple of Jesus.”
Faith sometimes reveals itself quietly, courageously, at the moment it matters most.
“He wrapped it in a clean linen cloth…”
Even in death, Jesus is honored with dignity and love.
“Placed it in his own new tomb…”
Joseph gives Jesus what was meant for himself — a costly act of devotion.
“The next day… the chief priests and Pharisees went to Pilate.”
Even Jesus’ enemies remember His promise. Their fear becomes part of God’s plan.
“Make the tomb secure…”
Human attempts to stop resurrection only highlight God’s unstoppable power.
The silence of the tomb is not the end — it is the pause before glory.
As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
God is working even when you cannot see or feel Him.

Closing Prayer
Jesus, thank You for entering the silence of the tomb for my sake. When life feels still, uncertain, or heavy, remind me that You are always at work, even when I cannot see it. Teach me to trust You in the waiting, to hope in the quiet, and to believe that resurrection is coming. As I walk with You toward the cross, anchor my heart in Your unfailing promise. Amen.
