🎄 December Theme: The Journey to the Manger
📖 Scripture
Luke 1:5–17 (NIV)
“In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah… An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him: ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John… He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.’”
📚 Background
Zechariah was a faithful priest, serving God even in his old age. He and his wife Elizabeth had longed for a child but remained childless. In this passage, God breaks into their waiting with a miraculous promise: the birth of John the Baptist, who would prepare the way for Jesus. This encounter reminds us that God’s timing is perfect, and His promises are sure—even when they seem delayed.
💬 Devotional
A friend once shared how she prayed for years for a breakthrough in her family. She said, “I didn’t see answers right away, but when God moved, it was better than I imagined.” Her story echoes Zechariah’s encounter.
Zechariah’s prayers were heard, though the answer came later than expected. God not only gave him a son but also entrusted that son with a divine mission—to prepare the way for the Messiah. On our journey to the manger, we are reminded that God hears our prayers, even when His answers come in unexpected ways.
Zechariah’s encounter teaches us that waiting is not wasted. God uses seasons of waiting to prepare us for His greater purposes.
