The Cost of His Calling

Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross

🕊️ Welcome Moment

Some seasons of obedience carry a hidden cost—misunderstanding, pressure, waiting, or even rejection. Jesus knew this intimately. As His public ministry grew, so did the opposition, the whispers, and the danger. Yet He continued to walk in the Father’s timing, not the world’s expectations.

As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to consider the cost of following God’s call—and the courage it takes to obey even when others don’t understand.

📖 Scripture Immersion

John 7:1–13 (NIV)
“My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.”
“…But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.”

Read slowly. Notice the tension, the pressure, and the quiet resolve of Jesus.

🌄 Snapshot

The Feast of Tabernacles was approaching—a joyful, crowded celebration in Jerusalem. Jesus’ brothers urged Him to go publicly, to prove Himself, to show His works to the world. Their words carried a sting: “Even His own brothers did not believe in Him.”

But Jesus refused to be pushed by human agendas.
He waited for the Father’s timing.
He chose obedience over approval.
He walked quietly, not seeking attention, but fulfilling His calling step by step.

The cost of His calling was already rising—and He embraced it with unwavering trust.

🔍 Deep Dive

“Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea…”
Danger was growing. Jesus was fully aware of the threat, yet He remained faithful to His mission.

“His brothers said to him, ‘Leave Galilee and go to Judea…’”
Even those closest to Him misunderstood His purpose.
Obedience often means walking a path others cannot see.

“For even his own brothers did not believe in him.”
Jesus experienced the pain of unbelief within His own family.
Your calling may also be questioned by those you love.

“My time is not yet here…”
Jesus lived by divine timing, not human pressure.
Surrender means trusting God’s pace, not rushing ahead.

“He went also, but in secret.”
Jesus chose quiet obedience over public display.
Sometimes the holiest steps are the hidden ones.

“No one would say anything publicly about him for fear…”
The atmosphere was thick with tension.
Following Jesus has always required courage.

As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
The cost of your calling is real—but so is the One who walks with you.

  • Steady Walk: As you walk, imagine Jesus moving quietly toward Jerusalem—faithful, steady, surrendered.

🙏 Closing Prayer

Jesus, You know the cost of obedience. Teach me to trust Your timing, Your wisdom, and Your path. Strengthen me when I feel misunderstood, pressured, or afraid. Give me courage to follow You even when the way is hidden or costly. As I walk with You toward the cross, shape my heart to surrender fully to the Father’s will. Amen.
