The Rich Young Ruler

Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross

🕊️ Welcome Moment

Some encounters with Jesus expose the deepest attachments of our hearts. The rich young ruler came to Jesus sincerely, eagerly, even respectfully—but when Jesus invited him into deeper freedom, the cost felt too high.

As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, today’s passage invites you to consider what you are holding tightly—and what Jesus is gently asking you to release so you can follow Him more fully.

📖 Scripture Immersion

Mark 10:17–27 (NIV)
“Jesus looked at him and loved him.”
“Go, sell everything you have… Then come, follow me.”
“With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

Read slowly. Notice Jesus’ love, His invitation, and His promise.

🌄 Snapshot

A young man runs up to Jesus—earnest, moral, successful. He wants eternal life, and he believes he has done everything required. But Jesus sees beneath the surface.

With a look of love, Jesus touches the one place the man cannot surrender: his wealth, his security, his identity.

“Sell everything… then come, follow Me.”

The man’s face falls. He walks away sad—not because Jesus asked too much, but because he loved something else more.

Jesus doesn’t chase him.
He doesn’t soften the call.
He simply turns to His disciples and teaches them that the kingdom is entered not by effort, but by surrender.

🔍 Deep Dive

“As Jesus started on his way…”
This encounter happens on the road—Jesus is moving toward Jerusalem, toward the cross. Every step reveals what discipleship truly costs.

“Good teacher… what must I do?”
The young man is focused on doing. Jesus is focused on being—being surrendered, being free, being His.

“Jesus looked at him and loved him.”
The invitation to surrender always comes from love, not demand. Jesus exposes idols to heal, not to shame.

“One thing you lack…”
The man had everything except the one thing that mattered—an undivided heart.

“Sell everything… give to the poor… follow me.”
Jesus isn’t asking for poverty; He’s asking for priority.
He wants to be first, not one among many.

“He went away sad…”
Clinging to what we love more than Jesus always leads to sorrow.

“How hard it is…”
Jesus acknowledges the struggle. Wealth, comfort, and security can quietly become chains.

“With man this is impossible…”
Surrender is not something we achieve—it is something God enables.

“…but not with God; all things are possible with God.”
Even the hardest letting‑go becomes possible in His strength.

As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
He never asks you to release anything without offering something better—Himself.

🙏 Closing Prayer

Jesus, You look at me with love, even when You ask me to surrender what I cling to. Give me courage to release anything that competes with You. Free my heart from false security and lead me into the joy of following You fully. As I walk with You toward the cross, shape my desires, my priorities, and my trust. Amen.
