Forty Steps with Jesus: Walking the Road to the Cross
đď¸ Welcome Moment
Some encounters with Jesus expose the deepest attachments of our hearts. The rich young ruler came to Jesus sincerely, eagerly, even respectfullyâbut when Jesus invited him into deeper freedom, the cost felt too high.
As you walk these Forty Steps with Jesus, todayâs passage invites you to consider what you are holding tightlyâand what Jesus is gently asking you to release so you can follow Him more fully.
đ Scripture Immersion
Mark 10:17â27 (NIV)
âJesus looked at him and loved him.â
âGo, sell everything you have⌠Then come, follow me.â
âWith man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.â
Read slowly. Notice Jesusâ love, His invitation, and His promise.
đ Snapshot
A young man runs up to Jesusâearnest, moral, successful. He wants eternal life, and he believes he has done everything required. But Jesus sees beneath the surface.
With a look of love, Jesus touches the one place the man cannot surrender: his wealth, his security, his identity.
âSell everything⌠then come, follow Me.â
The manâs face falls. He walks away sadânot because Jesus asked too much, but because he loved something else more.
Jesus doesnât chase him.
He doesnât soften the call.
He simply turns to His disciples and teaches them that the kingdom is entered not by effort, but by surrender.
đ Deep Dive
âAs Jesus started on his wayâŚâ
This encounter happens on the roadâJesus is moving toward Jerusalem, toward the cross. Every step reveals what discipleship truly costs.
âGood teacher⌠what must I do?â
The young man is focused on doing. Jesus is focused on beingâbeing surrendered, being free, being His.
âJesus looked at him and loved him.â
The invitation to surrender always comes from love, not demand. Jesus exposes idols to heal, not to shame.
âOne thing you lackâŚâ
The man had everything except the one thing that matteredâan undivided heart.
âSell everything⌠give to the poor⌠follow me.â
Jesus isnât asking for poverty; Heâs asking for priority.
He wants to be first, not one among many.
âHe went away sadâŚâ
Clinging to what we love more than Jesus always leads to sorrow.
âHow hard it isâŚâ
Jesus acknowledges the struggle. Wealth, comfort, and security can quietly become chains.
âWith man this is impossibleâŚâ
Surrender is not something we achieveâit is something God enables.
ââŚbut not with God; all things are possible with God.â
Even the hardest lettingâgo becomes possible in His strength.
As you walk toward the cross with Jesus, remember:
He never asks you to release anything without offering something betterâHimself.
