The Kingdom Is Growing
Theme for September: Rooted in Faith: Growing Closer to Christ: Faithful Every Day
Scripture: Ephesians 5:21-33; Luke 13:18-21
Welcome Moment
Pause and breathe deeply.
Imagine standing beside a freshly planted garden. At first glance, it appears almost empty. Tiny seeds are hidden beneath the soil. There are no towering plants, no colorful blooms, no visible harvest.
Yet beneath the surface, something extraordinary is happening.
The seeds are awakening.
Roots are beginning to form.
Life is quietly emerging.
God’s kingdom often works this way. Much of His activity begins unseen. Growth starts small and hidden before it becomes visible and transformative.
Today, Christ invites us to trust that even the smallest acts of faith can become part of something far greater than we imagine.
Scripture Immersion
In Ephesians, Paul calls believers to live in mutual love and self-giving service, reflecting the sacrificial love of Christ. Relationships become places where God’s love is revealed and nurtured.
In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a mustard seed and to yeast mixed into flour. Both begin small and seemingly insignificant, yet both create remarkable growth and transformation.
Together these readings remind us that God frequently works through small beginnings.
Small acts of faith.
Small acts of love.
Small acts of obedience.
And through them, God’s kingdom continues to grow.
Snapshot
An elderly gardener planted a tiny seed near the corner of a fence line. Visitors hardly noticed it. Compared to the larger plants nearby, it seemed insignificant.
Year after year, the gardener cared for it.
Watered it.
Protected it.
Nurtured it.
Over time, the small seed became a strong tree whose branches provided shade for travelers, shelter for birds, and beauty for everyone who passed by.
Many who admired the tree never saw the tiny seed from which it grew.
Yet without that small beginning, none of the later blessings would have existed.
God’s work in our lives often unfolds in the same way.
Deep Dive
One of the greatest challenges of faith is trusting God during seasons when growth feels invisible.
We pray and do not immediately see results.
We serve and wonder if it matters.
We obey and question whether our efforts make a difference.
Yet Jesus reminds us that the kingdom grows in ways we often cannot measure.
The mustard seed appears insignificant, yet it becomes a place of shelter.
A small amount of yeast transforms an entire batch of dough.
Likewise, a single act of kindness can change someone’s day.
A faithful prayer can influence a life.
A word of encouragement can strengthen a weary heart.
A simple step of obedience can open doors we never expected.
Paul’s words in Ephesians point toward relationships shaped by Christ’s love. Every act of humility, service, patience, and sacrifice becomes fertile ground where God’s kingdom can grow.
The world often celebrates big accomplishments and visible success.
God often begins with unseen seeds.
The conversation you have today.
The prayer you whisper.
The forgiveness you extend.
The kindness you offer.
The trust you choose.
These may seem small, but in God’s hands they become part of His transforming work.
Never underestimate what God can do with a willing heart and a faithful step.
The kingdom is growing, even when you cannot yet see the harvest.

Pilgrimage Practice
Today, intentionally plant one “mustard seed” of faith.
Choose one small action that reflects God’s love:
- Offer encouragement to someone.
- Spend extra time in prayer.
- Forgive a small offense.
- Serve quietly without recognition.
- Share a word of hope.
As you do, pray:
“Lord, take this small offering and use it for Your kingdom.”
This evening, thank God for the hidden ways He is working, trusting that growth often begins beneath the surface.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that Your kingdom often begins in small and unexpected ways. Help me trust You when growth feels slow and when results seem hidden from view.
Plant Your Word deeply within my heart and make me fertile ground for all that You desire to accomplish. Teach me to value faithfulness over recognition and obedience over immediate results.
Help me reflect the love of Christ in my relationships and daily interactions. May every act of kindness, every prayer, and every step of faith become part of Your kingdom work.
Give me patience to trust Your timing and confidence to believe that You are always at work, even when I cannot see it.
May my life continue to grow closer to Christ and bear fruit for Your glory.
In the name of Jesus, I pray.
Amen.
