Called and Sent: Following Christ Day by Day
Welcome Moment
In a world that prizes busyness, silence feels like surrender. Yet St. Benedict understood that listening is the first act of love. His rule begins with one word—Listen.
Today’s devotional invites you to walk in the Spirit by learning to listen like Benedict: with a heart that hears Christ in stillness, service, and simplicity.
Scripture Immersion
Luke 10:38–42 Martha welcomed Him into her home. Mary sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to His teaching. Martha was distracted with much serving… The Lord answered her, “Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken from her.”
Pause and imagine the scene. The clatter of dishes, the hum of conversation—and one quiet soul, still before her Savior.
Snapshot
Picture a monastery at dawn. Bells echo softly through the valley. Monks move in silence, their rhythm shaped by prayer and work. In the chapel, a single candle flickers as Scripture is read aloud.
No one rushes. No one interrupts. Every breath becomes an act of listening—listening for God’s voice in the ordinary.
Like Mary at Jesus’ feet, Benedict teaches us that holiness begins not in doing, but in being attentive.
Deep Dive
“Mary has chosen the better part…” Jesus isn’t dismissing Martha’s service; He’s revealing the balance between action and contemplation. Listening grounds our labor in love.
St. Benedict’s wisdom: “Listen carefully, my child, to the master’s instructions, and attend to them with the ear of your heart.” The ear of the heart hears beyond words—it receives grace.
Walking in the Spirit means cultivating inner stillness amid outward motion. When we listen deeply, our work becomes worship.

Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to listen with the ear of my heart. Quiet the noise within me so I may hear Your voice. Let my work flow from Your presence and my service be rooted in love. Like Mary and Benedict, may I choose the better part— to sit at Your feet, to listen, and to live in Your peace. Amen.
