Choosing the Better Part (Martha, Mary & Lazarus)

Called and Sent: Following Christ Day by Day

Welcome Moment

Life often pulls us in many directions—tasks, responsibilities, and expectations. Yet Jesus gently reminds us that one thing matters most: His presence. In the home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, we see the tension between doing and being, serving and sitting.

Today’s devotional invites you to walk in the Spirit by choosing the better part—resting at the feet of Christ and letting His love reorder your priorities.

Scripture Immersion

Luke 10:42 “There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken from her.”

Pause and imagine the scene: the aroma of bread in the air, the sound of conversation, and Mary sitting quietly before Jesus, her heart fully attentive.

Snapshot

Martha moves briskly through the house, preparing the meal, her mind racing with details. Mary sits still, eyes fixed on Jesus, soaking in every word. Martha’s frustration rises—she feels unseen, overwhelmed.

Jesus turns to her with compassion, not condemnation. He doesn’t dismiss her service; He redirects her focus. The better part is not neglecting duty but centering devotion.

In every home, every heart, the same choice remains: Will we rush through our days, or will we pause to listen?

Deep Dive

“There is need of only one thing…” Jesus speaks to the heart of distraction. The “one thing” is communion with Him—the source of peace that sustains all service.

“Mary has chosen the better part…” Choosing the better part means prioritizing presence over performance. It’s not about doing less but about doing what matters most—with Christ at the center.

Walking in the Spirit means learning to serve from stillness, to act from intimacy, and to let love guide every motion.

Companion Questions

  1. What distractions keep you from sitting at Jesus’ feet?
  2. How can you balance service and stillness in your daily life?
  3. When have you felt Jesus inviting you to slow down and listen?
  4. What does “the better part” look like for you this week?

Pilgrimage Practice

  • Morning Centering: Begin your day with, “Lord, help me choose You first.”
  • Quiet Pause: Take five minutes midday to sit in silence, imagining yourself at Jesus’ feet.
  • Grateful Service: Perform one act of kindness today, rooted in peace rather than pressure.
  • Evening Reflection: Ask, “Did I choose the better part today?” and rest in His grace.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, Teach me to serve with love and listen with stillness. When my heart grows hurried, draw me back to Your feet. Let my work flow from worship and my actions from peace. May I choose the better part each day— to dwell in Your presence and live from Your love. Amen.
