Theme for September: Rooted in Faith: Growing Closer to Christ: Faithful Every Day

Scripture: Philippians 1:18b-26; Luke 14:1, 7-11

Welcome Moment

Pause for a moment and rest in the presence of God.

Imagine entering a beautiful banquet hall. The room is filled with people seeking the best seats, eager to be noticed, recognized, and honored. Amid the bustle, you quietly step back and observe.

Then your attention turns to Jesus.

He is not concerned with status or recognition. He sees beyond appearances and into the condition of every heart.

As you walk toward Him, you realize that true greatness in God’s kingdom looks very different from greatness in the world.

Today, Christ invites us to lay aside pride, embrace humility, and allow Him to be magnified in our lives.

Scripture Immersion

In Philippians, Paul speaks from a place of deep trust. Whether he lives or dies, his greatest desire is that Christ be honored and magnified. His focus is not on himself but on the glory of God and the spiritual growth of others.

In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus observes guests seeking places of honor at a banquet. He teaches that those who exalt themselves will be humbled, while those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Together these passages reveal a beautiful truth:

A life surrendered to Christ seeks not self-promotion, but God’s glory.

Snapshot

A gardener noticed two plants growing side by side.

One stretched upward quickly, competing for attention and sunlight. The other focused on developing strong roots beneath the surface.

At first, the taller plant seemed more impressive.

Yet when harsh winds arrived, its shallow roots could not sustain it.

The deeply rooted plant remained standing.

Its strength had been formed in hidden places.

Humility often works the same way.

The world notices what is visible.

God develops strength in what is unseen.

Deep Dive

Humility is often misunderstood.

Some believe humility means thinking less of ourselves. In reality, biblical humility means thinking of ourselves less often and thinking more about God and others.

Paul demonstrates this beautifully.

His circumstances were difficult, yet his concern was not his own comfort or reputation. His desire was simple:

“That Christ will be magnified.”

Those words challenge us.

How often do we seek recognition?

How often do we desire affirmation?

How often do we quietly hope others will notice our accomplishments?

Jesus gently redirects our attention.

In the kingdom of God, humility is fertile soil where spiritual growth flourishes.

Pride seeks to elevate self.

Humility seeks to glorify Christ.

Pride craves recognition.

Humility embraces faithfulness.

Pride focuses on position.

Humility focuses on service.

Like roots growing beneath the soil, humility often develops in hidden ways. It grows when we choose kindness without recognition, serve without applause, forgive without acknowledgment, and love without expecting anything in return.

The beautiful promise of Jesus is that God sees every hidden act of faithfulness.

When Christ becomes the center of our lives, we no longer need to compete for honor because our identity is secure in Him.

The goal is not to make much of ourselves.

The goal is to make much of Christ.

Encourage someone anonymously.

Pray for another person without mentioning it.

Perform an act of kindness that only God sees.

As you do, pray:

“Lord, help me decrease so that Your presence may increase in my life.”

Throughout the day, repeat:

“May Christ be magnified in me.”

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the example of Jesus, who walked in perfect humility and love. Teach me to follow His example each day.

Protect me from pride and the desire for recognition. Help me find joy in serving others and honoring You. May my life point people toward Christ rather than toward myself.

Plant Your Word deeply within my heart and make me fertile ground for humility, grace, and compassion. Strengthen the hidden roots of faith that allow me to stand firm in every season.

Like Paul, may my greatest desire be that Christ is magnified in my life. Whether in moments of success or struggle, help me live in a way that brings glory to You.

Thank You for seeing the things that others overlook and for shaping my heart into the likeness of Your Son.

In the name of Jesus, I pray.

Amen.
