Theme for November: Grateful Hearts, Faithful Lives: Finding God in Every Season

Scripture: Philippians 2:5-11; Luke 14:15-24

Welcome Moment

Pause and take a slow, deep breath.

Imagine yourself standing at the entrance of a great banquet hall. Preparations have been completed. The table is set. Every place has been prepared with care. The host eagerly awaits the arrival of the guests.

Yet as invitations are delivered, many begin offering excuses. They are distracted by possessions, responsibilities, and personal priorities.

You stand quietly at the doorway and watch.

Then your attention shifts to Jesus.

He is not focused on status, recognition, or personal gain. His heart is centered on welcoming, serving, and loving others.

Today, Christ invites us to examine not just our actions but our mindset.

Are we thinking more like the world, or are we learning to embrace the mind of Christ?

Scripture Immersion

In Philippians, Paul calls believers to adopt the attitude of Jesus Himself. Though Christ possessed all authority and glory, He humbled Himself, took the form of a servant, and became obedient even to death on a cross.

Because of His humility and obedience, God highly exalted Him.

In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of a great banquet. When invited guests refuse to come, the host opens the doors to the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the marginalized, welcoming those society often overlooks.

Together, these passages reveal the heart of God’s kingdom:

Humility makes room for grace.

Compassion opens the door to others.

And the heart of Jesus always seeks to welcome rather than exclude.

Snapshot

A successful executive visited a community center one afternoon to participate in a volunteer project. Expecting to assist briefly, he was instead assigned to serve meals, clean tables, and sit with guests who simply needed someone to listen.

At first, the tasks seemed small.

Unimportant.

Far from the leadership responsibilities he was accustomed to.

Yet as the day unfolded, something changed.

Conversations revealed stories of struggle, courage, and resilience. The people he served became individuals rather than statistics.

Driving home that evening, he realized he had received far more than he had given.

Service had changed his perspective.

Humility had opened his heart.

Deep Dive

The world often teaches us to pursue recognition, advancement, and influence.

Jesus teaches something radically different.

He willingly laid aside privilege for service.

He chose compassion over status.

He embraced humility instead of self-promotion.

Paul’s words invite us to adopt that same mindset.

The mind of Christ is not focused on elevating self.

It is focused on glorifying God and loving others.

This does not mean thinking less of our worth. It means recognizing that our value comes from God and using our lives for His purposes.

In the parable of the banquet, those who were originally invited became distracted by lesser things. Opportunities were missed because priorities became misplaced.

How often does this happen in our own lives?

We become busy.

We become distracted.

We become focused on our own plans.

Meanwhile, God continues to extend His invitation into a deeper life of love, compassion, and service.

The fertile soil of faith develops when humility takes root within us.

As gratitude deepens, selfishness loosens its grip.

As compassion grows, our hearts become more attentive to those around us.

As we spend time with Christ, we begin thinking more like Him.

The mind of Christ is formed one surrendered choice at a time.

Pilgrimage Practice

Today, choose one intentional act of humble service.

Look for someone who may be overlooked, lonely, or in need of encouragement.

Offer your presence.

Listen carefully.

Serve quietly.

Give generously.

Pray for them before and after the encounter.

As you do, pray:

“Lord Jesus, form Your heart within me. Teach me to think, love, and serve as You do.”

At the end of the day, reflect on how humility and compassion changed your interactions with others.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the example of Jesus, who humbled Himself and demonstrated perfect love, obedience, and compassion.

Forgive me for the times I seek my own way instead of following Your heart. Teach me to embrace humility and to see others through the eyes of Christ.

Shape my thoughts, attitudes, and desires until they reflect the mind of Jesus. Help me welcome others with kindness, serve with gladness, and love without reservation.

Plant Your Word deeply within me and make my heart fertile ground for gratitude, compassion, and grace.

May my life bring honor to You, and may Christ be magnified through everything I say and do.

In His holy name, I pray.

Amen.
