Thanksgiving 2023 found Ran and I in Paris for our first international adventure together.
I’m sharing our adventure and offering a tip or two, amidst many travel resources available.

Going to Paris was a long-held dream for my sister and me, motivated by our desire to celebrate our grandmother, an incredible woman who embraced life.

Thanksgiving Day! (My favorite photo of us)

YES!! This was a moment.
On our Eiffel Tower tour, we filmed a marriage proposal, marking a special moment for the couple and ourselves.

The Louvre offers stunning art like the Venus de Milo and the lesser-known painting of Jesus at the wedding feast, but visitors should be prepared for large crowds and extensive walking due to its size.
Location really is everything. The Arc de Triomphe was just around the corner from our hotel.

Our remarkable experience included standing before the grave of the Marquis de Lafayette at Picpus Cemetery.

Lafayette was a huge supporter of the American Revolution, playing a pivotal role in both military and diplomatic efforts that helped secure independence from British rule. A couple of fun facts about the Marquis de Lafayette further illustrate his deep commitment to the cause. Members and former members of the military, in a touching display of respect, will often leave a coin on his grave, a tradition so meaningful that Ran, for instance, chose to place a penny as a tribute to this legendary figure. Moreover, Lafayette expressed a profound wish to be buried in American soil, signifying his deep bond with his adopted homeland; as a result, soil from Bunker Hill, a site of significant historical importance, was brought in to be laid with him in his final resting place. Every 4th of July, the Daughters of the American Revolution honor his legacy by replacing the American flag that waves proudly over his grave, ensuring that his memory and the sacrifices he made for freedom continue to be celebrated by future generations. This annual tribute not only serves as a reminder of Lafayette’s invaluable contributions but also reflects the enduring values of liberty and patriotism he championed throughout his life.

A few good tips we learned. To access money, use ATMs which often have lower fees than currency conversion rates. English is commonly spoken in popular areas, and many restaurants offer English menus. Some places accept American dollars. Tipping is uncommon in Europe, but can earn you favor. Enjoy fresh baguettes and be ready for a letdown with American food.
If anyone asks, the answer is YES! I’m ready to go again whenever you are. Just let me know when, and I will be excited to jump back into the adventure and face whatever comes our way.
