Forget the Former Things

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”Isaiah 43:18-19

Background:
The Book of Isaiah contains prophecies and messages from the prophet Isaiah to the people of Israel. These prophecies span a range of themes, from judgment to restoration, and from condemnation to hope. In this specific passage, God speaks to the Israelites during a time of exile in Babylon, a time of great sorrow and despair. They are burdened by the past, including their past disobedience and the consequences of their exile. Amidst their suffering, God offers a message of hope: He is doing something new, something better, and something that will bring restoration and renewal to His people.

Devotional:
In the midst of our pain and struggles, it’s easy to become fixated on what has already happened. We often find ourselves living in the shadow of past mistakes, regrets, or even past victories. We dwell on what went wrong or what could have been. God, however, calls us to release the former things. He invites us to move forward, to stop allowing the past to hinder our progress.

The first part of this passage, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past”, is not merely about forgetting events or erasing memories; it’s about not letting those things define us or limit us. Our past, whether filled with successes or failures, should not hold us captive. Instead, God encourages us to open our hearts and minds to the new things He is doing. When we let go of the past, we make space for God’s fresh work in our lives.

God reassures His people that He is already at work in ways they may not even see. “See, I am doing a new thing!” The new thing God is doing may not be immediately apparent, but it is already underway. This may be a reminder that even when we feel lost or stuck, God is still active in our lives, creating opportunities for growth, healing, and transformation.

God also promises to make a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. This imagery speaks of God’s ability to provide in places of barrenness and difficulty. When we feel we are wandering in the wilderness of our lives, God is making a path for us. In areas of dryness, where there seems to be no hope, God brings renewal.

The invitation is to perceive the new thing God is doing. Are we looking for it? Are we ready to step forward into the new season He has for us, or are we too focused on the past to see what God is unfolding before us?

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your faithfulness, even when we find ourselves overwhelmed by the weight of the past. Help us to release the former things, the things that weigh us down and keep us from moving forward. Teach us to trust in Your promises and to look with hope toward the new things You are doing in our lives. Open our eyes to the ways You are working in our midst, even when we can’t yet see it. Lead us through the wilderness and bring streams of renewal to the dry places of our hearts. We trust in Your plan and Your perfect timing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection:

  • What are some of the “former things” in your life that you need to let go of in order to embrace God’s new work in you?
  • How can you begin to perceive the new thing God is doing, even if it’s not immediately visible?
  • In what areas of your life do you need God to make a way in the wilderness or provide streams in the wasteland? How can you trust Him to do so?

Application

  1. Release the past: Reflect on areas in your life where past failures, hurts, or even successes may be holding you back. Pray for the strength to let go and focus on what God is doing now.
  2. Open your eyes to the new: Look for evidence of God’s work in your current circumstances. Journal or take time to recognize how He is creating new opportunities, growth, or restoration in your life.
  3. Trust in God’s provision: When you feel like you’re in a “wilderness” season, remind yourself that God promises to make a way. Lean into His guidance and provision, even when the path forward feels unclear.
  4. Embrace change with faith: Step into the new things God is bringing with courage and trust, knowing that His plans are good and purposeful.

Takeaway Thoughts
  1. Dwelling on the past can hinder us from embracing the new things God is doing in our lives.
  2. God is continually at work, bringing renewal and hope even in the midst of challenges.
  3. Letting go of former things allows us to fully experience the blessings and opportunities God has for us now.
  4. Trusting God in seasons of change strengthens our faith and allows us to witness His transformative power.
